In July 2024, two Japanese mountaineers fell on K2, the world’s second-highest peak. Kazuya Hiraide and Kenro Nakajima were among the world’s foremost alpine climbers. The unclimbed route they set out to tackle on K2’s west face was one of the most difficult challenges even on this mountain. Their love for their families and their passion for a form of climbing that demands everything they have intertwine, raising profound questions about the meaning of life.
