The 17th edition of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao Bizkaia to be held from 6 to 15 December 2024 now has its official poster. It is titled Fuego, by the French photographer Jean-Baptiste Liautard, and it has been awarded the Mendi Film festal poster prize along with 700 euros in the international mountain activity photography contest CVCEPHOTO organised by the Club Vasco de Camping Elkartea, club of San Sebastian.
The Guatemalan volcano Volcán de Fuego is the striking backdrop for the photograph, taken from the nearby mountain of Acatenango. In the midst of the volcano's eruption and the heavy lava flow, biker Kilian Born descends at night while lighting his way with a headlamp and the volcano's own eruption and lava flow. "The eruption was happening two kilometres further on, throwing lava 500 metres into the air. Capturing the moment was very difficult because we couldn't foresee the explosions," says JB Liautard of the photo.
The 28-year-old photographer from Valence won three prizes at this year's CVCEPHOTO: The Grand Prix for his photograph The Dune, and the third prize along with the Mendi Film prize for his photograph Fuego. Mountain biking is the focal point of his photographic work.
