The Shepherd’s leap (El Salto del Pastor) or the Shepherd’s pole vaulting (Salto del Garrote) on the island of Gran Canaria was born of the aboriginal Canary islanders need to use long poles to move around the rugged terrain of the island. Bonifacio, one of the last shepherds and jumpers, took it upon himself to put the teachings into practice in the ‘80s, so that they would not be lost as a cultural tradition. Thanks to this initiative, the ‘Salto del Garrote’ is preserved as a cultural and recreational practice and the practitioners meet in groups called ‘Jurrias.’
