In 1984, the Slovak climber Zoltán Demján reached the summit of two eight-thousand peaks without supplementary oxygen. First, he climbed the southwest face of Lhotse Shar, then the south pillar of Everest. However, worsening weather turned his descent into a drama. But the achievement that would truly mark him for life was the 1988 alpine-style ascent of Dhaulagiri via the southwest pillar.
