In the times of the Cold War, a group of young Poles set up a canoeing club in Kraków as a way of escaping the monotony of life under the communist regime. They took to doing white-water kayaking and soon mounted an expedition to America, a valid excuse to distance themselves from the Soviet system. They became the first to navigate the deep Colca Canyon in Peru, and used the inertia of the fame this brought them to advocate for democracy in the Eastern Bloc.
