In the autumn of 1988, the Slovak climbers Dušan Becík, Peter Božík, Jaroslav Jaško and Sólo Jozef braved the Alpine style ascent of the southeast route of Mt. Everest, namely ‘The Hard Way.’ It is considered to be the most difficult of routes, which was opened by the Chris Bonnington-led British expedition in 1975. Ivan Fiala, the leader of the Slovak team, Chris Bonnington himself, or Peter Habeler, the first to ascend Everest without the aid of oxygen, recall that cutting edge and extreme climb, and its fatal outcome.
